Chapter 8: The Constitution at Work
Essential Question:
Why do we need government?
What does the Constitution do for the people?
Chapter Overview:
The goal of the Constitution is to create a single unified nation of the various states. The Constitution ensures peace and stability throughout the land, defense of the nation, and guarantees rights of each of the its citizens. As we learned in the last chapter, the Constitution also limits the power of the government. The Constitution can be changed, but it is difficult. The Constitution has only changed slowly over the last two plus centuries.
This chapter explores the five principles of the Constitution: Federalism, popular sovereignty, checks and balances, separation of powers, and limited government. It also looks at the roles of each of the three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. Lastly, the chapter examines the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
